Screenings

  • Vision:
    • The goal of our vision screening program is to identify a possible problem and refer that student to an eye care specialist for diagnostic evaluation and treatment when appropriate.
    • There are resources available through SBCISD Health Services for students with no health care insurance*.
  • Hearing:
    • Our goal is to identify children with hearing loss.  Without this procedure, many significant hearing losses can go undetected.
  • Acanthosis Nigricans
    • A disorder that causes light brown-black, velvety, rough or thickened areas on the surface of the skin.
    • It is usually found around the neck, armpits, and over the knuckles.
    • These markings in children can be a primary marker that signals high insulin levels, which is a sign of insulin resistance.
    • Insulin resistance creates the potential risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
    • Currently, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grade students are assessed for this marker.

*For more information on assistance with eye exams and/or glasses, call me @ 361-6707 or e-mail @ rafonseca@sbcisd.net .
